Drypoint Intaglio Etching
ADULT COURSE: 6 week course | 18 hours
Printmaking workshops crafted for those who want to roll up their sleeves and get creative.
This course introduces and develops drypoint and monoprint techniques. Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate with a pointed tool. The lines create a burr that holds ink, which when printed creates a distinct, velvety image. Drypoint is a relative easy technique to learn and is a great method if you would like to take your drawings into print. The soft, feathery lines of drypoint lend themselves to playful illustrations or expressive sketches. The plates can be printed as an edition or combined with other techniques to produce unique monoprints.
This course is designed for those who are keen to explore drypoint etching techniques while creating their own unique artworks. There will be time to learn, develop and experiment with a range of processes that will inform your personal development of imagery and mark making.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of drypoint through:
Drawing layers of line and texture directly onto a plate with drypoint needles.
Exploring different ways of mark making using various tools and methods.
Inking and wiping the plate to produce rich texture and quality of line.
Combining other techniques such as relief roll, chine collé and monotype to add tone, colour and texture.
Using a traditional etching press to transfer artwork from plate to paper.
Whether you are new to print or looking to refresh your understanding, this is a fantastic way to explore a variety of techniques in our purpose-designed studio. Participants learn in a small, friendly group and will take home beautifully printed original works of art on paper.

★★★★★
“I've done a printing workshop over a weekend and Renée was a great guide and generous teacher. She has a lot of wisdom about things printerish and has a very inclusive reassuring way of passing on her knowledge. And I loved using those old presses.”
